My Primal Music

I have always liked music, but it was not until I heard The Beatles in December 1963 that it touched me deeply. Music made me feel so many things—tingles, rushes, excitement, euphoria, sadness. It was very, very intense for me. I had to learn guitar and start writing songs.

Playing music was (and is) a bliss for me, using Joseph Campbell's use of the word. Unfortunately, for various reasons, my parents did not support my efforts. I was not self-confident enough to move forward without their support, so I studied art and went into graphics. Music became a hobby.

In the last thirty-five years, I have written hundreds of songs and only shared them with friends and family. When I regained confidence through primal work, I did start to sing them in public, but I needed something more to take another step.

My parents had not encouraged me, and I still needed that type of support. With the steady encouragement of my life partner, Jane Lewis, some part of me solidified, and I did what I had wanted to do for many, many years—make a recording.

This Wednesday, December 10, 2003, my first music CD will be released. It's been a long time coming, but I have given myself the gift of my own musical expression. I have also devoted a website to this music: http://www.samturton.com/

To me, my music is as important as the writings on this site. There are many ways to share a primal way of life, and music is one of them. I hope that we all find our own bliss—and also find a way to express it.
