Naps

Our feline family member is an expert at taking naps—as most cats are. He lives unaware of the mechanized contraption known as The Clock. He follows his body needs, not the needs of an arbitrary timetable. This may seem insignificant, but I don't think it is.

Many people I know have difficulty sleeping when their bodies need it. In the hyper-aroused state created by modern stimulus and stimulants, they may not even be aware of their tiredness. But the body—and the mind—suffer.

It's an interesting exercise to regularly check in and ask, "Am I tired?" If we are, it is equally interesting to see if we can find time for more rest and sleep. And it is really interesting to see what happens when we find the time. If we can't just doze off, what is it that's going on that keeps us alert? It may be many things, unique to the individual. All of them will likely be linked to significant personal issues.

When it comes to personal growth and development, I have found that the process will often move forward more gracefully if the body is fortified with sleep.

On that note, I think I'll curl up with the cat.
